남북관계는 남한 국민의 통일의식에 영향을 미칠까? 이에 대한 답은 일견 당연해 보이지만 엄밀하게 검증된 사례는 부족하다. 이에 본 연구는 서울대학교 통일평화연구원의‘통일의식조사’와 구글의 빅데이터를 가공한 ‘남북관계지수’를 활용하여 남북관계가 남한국민의 통일의식에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 통계적인 검증을 수행한다. 분석 결과 남북관계가 우호적일수록 남한 국민은 통일이 필요하다고 응답하며, 통일이 개인과 국가에 이익이 될 것이라고 응답하는 등 통일의식이 개선되었다. 또한, 남북관계가 좋아질수록 북한을 우호적인 대상으로 인식하였으며, 북한 정권을 대화와 타협이 가능한 상대로 응답하는 등 대북인식 역시 남북관계와 밀접한 관련이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 북한의 무력도발 가능성, 한반도 전쟁 가능성, 북한의 핵무기 포기 가능성 등 남한 국민의 안보인식역시 남북관계에 영향을 받았다. 이를 통해 남북관계가 개선될 경우 한국 사회의 통일에대한 기대와 관심이 증가할 것이며, 북한에 대한 인식이 개선될 것이라 예상할 수 있다. 마지막으로 성별, 연령별, 정치 성향별로 남북관계가 통일의식에 미친 영향을 살펴보았다. 남북관계가 통일인식에 미친 영향은 남성과 여성 사이에 차이가 없었으나 나이가 어릴수록, 진보적인 정치적 성향일수록 남북관계가 통일의식에 미치는 효과가 큰 것으로 나타났다. 결론적으로 한국 사회의 통일에 대한 기대를 높이기 위해서는 구조적인 남북관계 개선방안에 대한 고민이 필요하다.

Do inter-Korean relations affect South Koreans’ perception on unification? The answer to this question seems obvious at first glance, but rigorous studies on this matter are lacking indeed. This study statistically verifies how inter-Korean relations affect South Koreans' unification perception by using the data from 'Unification Perception Survey' of the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies at Seoul National University and the 'Inter-Korean Relations Index' processed by Google's big data. As a result, the closer the inter-Korean relations were, the more South Koreans responded that unification was necessary and would benefit individuals and the country. In addition, as inter-Korean relations improved, South Koreans had more favorable perception of North Korea as a possible partner for dialogue and compromise. If inter-Korean relations improve, Korean society's expectations and interests in unification will increase, and it can be expected that the perception of North Korea will also improve. Finally, the effect of inter-Korean relations on the unification perception was examined by gender, age and political orientation. While there was no difference between men and women, inter-Korean relations had greater effect on the unification perception among the younger generation and the more politically progressive population. In conclusion, in order to raise expectations for the unification of Korean society, it is necessary to consider ways to improve structural inter-Korean relations.
