It has been a decade since the Cheŏnan, a South Korean patrol ship, was sunk by a torpedo fired by a North Korean submarine. What most nations would have considered an act of war took a puzzling twist in South Korea as the country became polarized regarding the cause of the sinking. Despite the multinational Civilian-Military Joint Investigation Group’s findings identifying North Korea as the perpetrator, political division over the issue did not subside. The controversy resurfaced during President Moon Jae In’s efforts to implement his peace initiatives toward the North. On the 10th anniversary of this tragic incident, this article examines the official findings regarding how the Cheonan was sunk, the extent of the political division, and why it’s important to remember this incident. A thorough recounting is necessary if we are to prevent the vicious pattern of North Korean provocations from being repeating.
