A Study on the Biological Son Quest Motif in Lady Nokjok’s Narration

This study focused on the biological child explorative motif of Lady Nokjok’s Narration and looked into its narrative pattern and meaning. The journey of for the sons that Lady Nokjok has lost is consistent with the explorative narration portraying the journey of hero looking for the results. Lady Nokjok, the subject of quest, is a woman who has the animal image of deer and has the existential characteristics that can reveal half man-half beast deity or heroic nature. The object of her quest is the sons who were born abnormally and abandoned. The quest process consists of the action by the sons who were grown into great commanders or generals in China and invade their homeland and that Lady Nokjok meets her sons and verify whether they are her biological children. In this process, Lady Nokjok goes through the adversities and obtains assistance from helper, the general elements of explorative narration. Then, the results of quest show Lady Nokjok’s reunion with her sons and formation of happy family and her role spearheading the effort to overcome national crisis. This explorative journey of Lady Nokjok can be defined as a ‘mother’s search for her sons’. The story of Lady Nokjok shows that the sons born with abnormalities are brought to the verge of being abandoned into the river or sea and killed, and that they receive assistance from helper to overcome adversities and finally meet their mother so as to become happy. Through this heroic narration structure, the characteristics of the narration, ‘mother’s search for her sons’, are revealed. As an explorative narration, the particularly noticeable parts in Lady Nokjok’s Story as an explorative narration relate to the pattern and meaning of the 3 types of biological child verification procedures for validating that they are her real sons following her encounter with them and substantiation through the identity perception office. That represents the narration led by maternal subject based on the breast-feeding behavior symbolized by ①‘breast’, and confirms that Lady Nokjok and her sons are sacred existence through the animal image of ‘②deer,’ and highlight heroic quality of Lady Nokjok’s sons based on the divine symbol of ③‘wing’ and ‘seven-star spots’. Such biological child quest motif in Lady Nokjok’s Story is considered to be rare and highly characteristic in our family explorative narration. The partition and reunion between Lady Nokjok and her sons, which form the core of Lady Nokjok’s Narration, contains the emotion of joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure, leading the public to feel fun and deep impression and actively participate in communication for a long time. The abundant mythological motif and original form characteristics, revealed by Lady Nokjok’s Narration such as half man-half beast, starvation, quest, etc,, are converged to the scene of partition and reunion between mother and sons. Here, the element of vitality in Lady Nokjok’s Story can be found. Therefore, the Lady Nokjok’s Story should be handled as the narrative material that expands and deepens the value as ethnic cultural asset, rather than remaining as folk legend of Pyeongyang and Anju region of the North Korea. This research hopes that academic discussion and literature related to Lady Nokjok’s Story and its expansion into the cultural text domain would be further stimulated.
