North Korea has been plagued by poverty since the 1990s, when the entire economic system came to a standstill. Although the economy has gradually recovered since the 2000s, the latest figures released by the North Korean government show that the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) per capita stood at $1,400 in 2019 (Figure 1).
