The April issue looks into North Korea’s fiscal status and relevant issues. Based on its official annual data on national budget, revenue and expenditure plans, the article estimates a long-term fiscal projection of North Korea. As its fiscal situation has gotten worse for two years in a row, there may be certain changes to the short-term policy responses (aimed at stimulating economic development) and mid- to long-term growth strategies (select and concentrate). Considering that general economic agents are most likely to shoulder the burden of the regime’s fiscal function, monitoring how the regime mobilizes its people for national projects and analyzing the impacts on its informal economic sector would help us have some indirect understanding of North Korea’s economic situation and developments. Relevant fiscal and budget statistics for this analysis are provided in the section for “Economic Material.”
