This study aims to critically explore the role of sport as a diplomatic vehicle in inter-Korean relations from a historical and political context, focusing on the integration theories. In-depth qualitative research was conducted analysing policy papers, academic studies, and media articles in order to investigate the theoretical framework, historical circumstances surrounding the Korean Peninsula, and sport policies of South Korean government. In short, our finding indicates that the role of sport as a social agent prevails only when political reconciliation succeeds. Nevertheless, it is also true that sport cooperation can contribute to easing tensions and sharing identity, thus integrating the divided people. Therefore, the utmost efforts to institutionalize the related system are essential to enhance sustainable and positive role of sport : reforming relevant regulations, securing stable funding, creating a cooperative body and diverse exchange programs are significant.
