The compositions of North Korean classical music from the last century has mostly been studied under a political and sociological lens. Due to the work’s compositional history and creative environment, the scholars believe the music to be governed by ‘Juche’, a North Korean political ideology derived from socialistic realism. However, it is necessary to provide the genre a place in its Western musical and historical tradition. Works written for Western instruments, namely piano, especially require examination from such context, for its compositional density and elusiveness from a concrete political narrative found in songs. This paper analyzes six North Korean piano works in its vein of Western music history. The piano works are discussed of its characteristic Romantic style of composition, that may be related to the zeitgeist of modern nationalism.
