Music in North Korea has its significance greater than mere a genre of art. Since the nation’s division, North Korea took advantage of music to be a political means intended to effectively emphasize and disseminate the Chuche idea, and developed the music in the name of so-called “Chuche music.” In particular, Kim Chong-il’s ruling era is called as the time of “music politics” and the Chuche music is the result of utilization of music for the people, who suffered severe hardships of life, to foster a bright hope for the future. Besides, as vocal music in North Korea can disseminate ideas through the words, it is considered more important than instrumental music, and North Korea independently developed vocalization technique that accords to Chuche-music. In recent years, we came to have easy access to songs and performances by North Korean musicians through the mass media. In other words, we can now directly witness the North Korean people’s actual life and listen to the musicians’ performances, which we could only see indirectly in the past through special programs compiled by a certain television station with participation of North Korean defectors. The songs sung by North Korean singers from various different regions and performance groups lead us to easily recognize them as being North Korean singers through their unique vocalism without the explanation that they are “the singers from North Korea.” Furthermore, even musical instrument players show characteristic features which are seen in vocalists. The present writer, who majored in the western music and western-style vocalization and teaches and performs them, has a great interest in North Korea’s vocalization technique that shows uniqueness while retaining similarity to western-style vocalism. How can we explain about the uniqueness that leads one to sense it is the North Korean style even by the first access? The question about practical differences taking place between western and North Korean vocalization while showing similarity to each other, and my interests in some other aspects, are the motives of this thesis. This thesis is the result of research as to how unique isthe North Korean vocalization –the music that came into the world under a peculiar political situation in North Korea after the nation’s division – and as to the reason why such situation has developed. As concrete research means, this thesis is intended to examine what is North Korean-style vocalization claimed by North Korea; the cause of its origination, and how it has developed after its birth. At the same time, this thesis also aims to review the nature of changes in vocalization, if any taking place during the short period of time after its origination, based on the screen image materials concerning actual performances that became easily accessibl in recent years.
