After Korean nation had become divided into North and South, Ch’oe Sŭng-hŭi had to determine which of the two opposite political systems she would join in order to continue her modernizing Asian Dance. Her choice was defection to North Korea following An Mak, her husband. This study examines how An Mak functioned to prepare the conditions for her decision. Ch’oe Sŭng-hŭi's speech in a newspaper article right before her defection shows that her rhetoric to describe her artistic ideals was almost same with that of her husband, An Mak, who had already flown to North Korea serving communism. This suggests that Ch’oe Sŭng-hŭi shared certain common denominator with North Korea as much as she shared her rhetoric with An Mak's and that the common denominator realized her defection. After she had arrived in North Korea, Ch’oe Sŭng-hŭi became a leading figure of theory and practice in dance based on socialist realism. Examining the process of Ch’oe Sŭng-hŭi's defection in connection with An Mak will serve as a way to understand Ch’oe Sŭng-hŭi's activities as a communist in North Korea
