This paper tracks how changes in the domestic and international situation from the late1960s to the early 1970s shaped the logic of anti-communism and cultural sensitivities ofCold War in order to shed light on the emotional characteristics of the Yusin period anti-communism propaganda. When viewing anti-communism as a social sensitivity of heterogeneouslycombined elements of various discourses and contradicting emotions, we seethat the Yusin Period’s anti-communism experienced a process of shakeups and reconstitutionin the later 1960s’ prominent anti-North Korea ideology and from in responsesto the international political order in the early 1970s. Anti-communism during this period― under pressure from demands for peace and reconciliation from the international situation, the South-North Korea peaceful unification plan, and the popular desire for unification― seemed to change proactively. It sought a new direction when the regime rolledback freedoms to escape the political crisis, adopting a new strategy of “knowing communism(知共, jikong)” and “defeating communism(勝共, seongkong)” with a consciousnessto properly know communism. Yet the accumulation of information and knowledgehad the opposite of the intended effect in familiarizing the population with communism. Basic knowledge of liberal democratic theory, which was spread in order to emphasize itssuperiority, was ironically applied to criticize the Yusin regime. In this context, anti-communism education and propaganda rested on a description of North Korean society, war,and spies accompanied by true stories and personal accounts. Novels, dramas, and moviesbased on these accounts were hugely influential in popular culture. The strengthening ofanti-North Korean ideology in the 1970s seemed to bring about the successful internalizingof anti-communism as “tactile Anti-communism” based on personal experiencespropagated through media began to be imbedded deep in the minds and senses of thepopulace. Yet the existence of emotions discordant with anti-communism discourse showsthat the internal contradiction of anti-communism brought about a paradoxical but foreseeablesituation where the strengthening of the state’s anti-communist discourse did notnecessarily internalize anti-communism for the populace nor completely strengthen itthroughout the society. Thus, the changes and strengthening of 1970s anti-communismdiscourse on the emotional and cultural level depict a multifaceted appearance.
