This paper reviews the “Sunshine” policy and tries to determine if this sort of strategy is applicable given the new realities of inter-Korean relations. It is obvious that Lee Myung-bak's administration attempts on denuclearization, openness and the ‘3000policy has failed to achieve its goals and has led to a new round of confrontation between North Korea and South Korea. It is evident that the new South Korean administration should revise its North Korea policy to fit the reality on the Korea peninsula. We argue that even if the new administration decides not to revive the principles of “Sunshine” policy, it still does make sense to adopt some of its basic ideas because they derive from previous concepts mutually agreed on between North and South Korea. We believe that the “Sunshine” policy principles constitute the only realistic and adequate approach to inter-Korean rapprochement which is the single path to a peaceful and an independent unification of Korea without any foreign interference or external pressure.
