In the midst of China’s alleged sanctions on North Korea in recent times, a critical question arises: What prompted China to pursue this end? It is almost impossible to know the answer to this question without an official explanation from the Chinese Communist Party (CPP). In lieu of official statements from the Party, this study deems editorials in major newspapers in Beijing as a reliable alternative source of information that can lead to insights into the thinking and views of the CCP on North Korea. By content analysis of editorials and commentaries, the study demonstrates the traces of changes in Beijing’s perception of the Korean situation and therefore the drive and rationale behind the changes in its actions against Pyongyang.
