There have been lots of discussions on reunification both by government and civil society in South Korea. It is true, however, that egoistic and idealist reunification policies have failed to achieve their own goals because those pursued without harmony to many other conditions domestic and international. In fact, idealist policies of South Korea have often made people’s enthusiasm to reunification skeptic as a result. Discussions on reunification are now on the gate of new route. If a possibility of North Korea’s nuclear problem solution appears, these discussions will be revitalized for resetting inter-Korean relationship and for rethinking reunification problem. But it would be a wrong way when South Korea goes on the path-dependency, which means self-egoistic policy for reunification. In this sense, this paper examines critically past and current policies of South Korean governments, then suggests how to change the further reunification policies of South Korea toward realistic way.
