After the Korean War, North Korea controled culture and art more strictly than before, founded on basic construction of socialism. As a traditional opera shared between South Korea and North Korea, Changgeuk underwent a lot of changes in North Korea during this period and 『Joseonchanggeukjip』 is a Changgeuk collection which was published in this period. 『Joseonchanggeukjip』 is valuable as a material to show some aspects of Changgeuk pursued by North Korea in the mid and late 1950s.
Among the three works; 〈Chunhyangjeon〉, 〈Simcheongjeon〉, and 〈Heungbojeon〉 included in this collection, this paper analyzed the characteristics of 〈Heungbojeon〉 which was adapted by Park, Tae-won by comparing this with South Korean Changgeuk and discussed the recognition and the acceptance process of North Korean classical narrative, 〈Heungbojeon〉.
First, this paper investigated the publication motive of 『Joseonchanggeukjip』 and the adaptation process of 〈Heungbojeon〉, focusing on the writer, Park, Tae-won who defected to North Korea. Then, this paper explored the narrative characteristics of North Korean Changgeuk, 〈Heungbojeon〉 by comparing this with South Korean Changgeuk, 〈Heungbojeon〉. As the result, North Korean Changgeuk, 〈Heungbojeon〉 was characterized by ① Madangsoe which was recreated as a satirist and an aggressive critic of Nolbo, ② figuration of the irrational society of the time as a reason for poverty of Heungbo, and logicality-orientation of narrative. Lastly, this paper explained the aspects of Changgeuk, 〈Heungbojeon〉 which was pursued by Park, Tae-won, based on North Korea’s recognition of classical narrative, 〈Heungbojeon〉 and furthermore, discussed the acceptance aspects of 〈Heungbojeon〉 in North Korea by considering 〈Heungbojeon〉 that was accepted as a film in 1962.
Before the division, South Korea and North Korea shared the same story, but in terms of the acceptance of story, they began to go different ways due to the ideological differences. This paper aimed to look into the aspects of North Korean Changgeuk, 〈Heungbojeon〉 and shed light on the meaning of 〈Heungbojeon〉 adapted by Park, Tae-won.
