본 논문은 미국이 주도한 경제제재 위협과 실행이 피제재국 핵무기 보유 여부에 미치는 영향 그리고 핵보유 이후 제재 철회과정의 조건 등을 설명한다. 이를 위해 미국의 제재위협과 실행 그리고 제재 성공과 실패의 네 가지 조합으로 범주를 분류하고 각각의 범주에 속하는 사례들을 하나씩 분석한다. 한국, 남아프리카공화국, 이스라엘, 인도와 파키스탄의 분석을 통해 핵무기 보유 추진 배경과 결과를 경제제재의 관점에서 설명한다.

Do economic sanctions stop targeted countries from possessing nuclear weapons? Under what conditions do sender countries lift sanctions when sanctions fail to make targeted countries abandon their nuclear weapons? We explain different results that the US-led economic sanctions or sanction threats have caused for the issue of stopping the possession of nuclear weapons. To analyze these differences, we focus on four outcomes of sanction episodes: success and failure of sanctions and sanction threats. In particular, we select four cases that belong to each category to conduct case studies: South Korea, South Africa, Israel, and India and Pakistan.
