이 논문은 해외 북한 식당에 파견된 북한 여성 노동자들의 노동과 공연, 방문객들과의 상호작용들을 탐구하면서, 초국가적 장소에서 젠더, 인종, 민족, 계급이 교차하는 권력 구조 하에 어떻게 북한적인 것들이 구성되고 있는지 해석하였다. 해외 북한 식당에서 파견 여성 노동자들은 북한 음식을 판매하면서 직접 무대 공연도 하고 있다. 주요 소비자들은 제3국 현지인만이 아니고 남한 사람들, 다른 아시아 국가들과 서구에서 온 방문객들이다. 해외 북한식당에서는 북한 여성 노동자와 방문객이 생산자-소비자이자 공연의 배우-관객의 관계를 수행하면서 정치적이고 문화적으로 ‘북한적인 것들’을 구성하고 있다. 첫째, 해외 북한 식당에서는 ‘소수의 남성 지배인-다수의 여성 노동자’ 가부장적 구조 하에 모든 여성 노동자들이 집단 숙소 생활을 하고 있다. 또한, 개인 외출은 제한되어 있으며 매주 생활 총화를 실시하는 등 북한에서와 같은 정치적 의례들을 수행한다. 이는 북한 밖에서도 마치 ‘작은 북한’에서 살고 있는 것과 같은 집단성을 갖게 하고 시간적ㆍ공간적으로 규율하는 효과를 갖는다. 둘째, 해외 북한 식당에서 구성되는 북한적인 것이란 복수의 북한적인 것들이다. 북한적인 것들은 북한식당의 분위기, 음식, 공연 등 생산자가 수행하는 북한적인 것과 소비자인 현지인, 남한 사람들, 서구에서 온 방문객들이 자신들의 시선을 투영하여 북한적인 것을 해석하고 상상하는 복합적 결과물들이며, 여기에는 젠더화되고 인종화된 권력이 재구성된다. 특히, 북한 여성들의 공연은 전지구적-서구적인 것과는 다른 지역적-이질적-동양적인 미적 가치를 내포한 것들로 해석되면서, 북한 여성들은 젠더화되고 인종화된 타자로 위치지워진다. 남한 사람들과 서구의 방문객들은 자신들이 마치 보편적인 코스모폴리탄 소비자로서 음식과 공연들을 음미하는 것처럼 행동하지만, 실제로는 남한화되고 서구화된 시선을 가지고 계급적이고 젠더화된, 그리고 인종화된 타자성으로서 북한적인 것들을 상상하고 구성하는 것이다.

This article examines the North Korean women migrants’ labor and performance at North Korean restaurants outside Korea. The North Korean government has rigorously recruited young and upper-middle-class women in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, to work at overseas North Korean restaurants. Overseas North Korean restaurants are typically located in big cities or tourist sites in Asian countries and attract a variety of visitors, including local residents and travelers from South Korea, other Asian countries, and Western countries. Based on in-depth interviews with North Korean women migrant workers, the article explores their daily lives and the interaction dynamics between workers and consumers, as well as performers and audiences, in the transnational setting of overseas North Korean restaurants. First, North Korean women workers have to live in groups under the patriarchal structure, where the majority of them are supervised by a few men managers. These women are expected to adhere to political and social rituals such as the life review session(Saengwhal chonghwa), which are designed to maintain a collectivist sense of living in a reminiscent of ‘little North Korea’ even while abroad. In addition, consumers of North Korean restaurants from South Korea, other Asian countries, and Western countries tend to construct and imagine ‘North Koreanness,’ which reflects gendered and racialized power relations. They consider themselves cosmopolitan consumers who savor food and performances when they, in fact, objectify North Korean women workers with the South Korean and Western gaze. As they interpret the performance of North Korean women as representing local, North Korean, and Oriental aesthetic values that differ from global and Western ones, consumers tend to imagine and construct North Koreanness as a gendered and racialized otherness.
