이 논문은 1959년 『중화인민공화국 국경지도집(中華人民共和國邊界地圖集)』에 실린 「장백산(백두산) 천지 지역 지도)」의 분석을 통하여 당시 중국의 백두산 지역 국경 인식에 대해 검토하고; 이 지도에 인용된 북한 지도의 국경 표시와 관련하여 그 유래를 확인하고자 하였다. 다음과 같은 점을 결론으로 제시하고 있다. 첫째; 이 지도에 그려진 중국의 국경표시 방식은 조-청 간의 국경협상에서 제시되거나 주장된 적이 없다. 둘째; 이 지도에 그려진 북한의 국경표시 방식 역시 조-청 간의 협상에서 제시되거나 주장된 적이 없다. 셋째; 이 지도에 표시된 중국의 간도협약 이해는 오류이다. 넷째; 이 지도에 표시된 북한의 국경표시 방식은 일제지형도(1/5만) 백두산 지역 지도의 제도구역; 간도협약 그리고 김일성의 항일운동 밀영과 관련 있는 것으로 추정된다. 넷째; 두만강 상류 일부 구간에서 양국은 일제지형도(1/5만)에 따라 이해된 간도협약에 기초하여 실질적 관할구역을 설정한 것으로 보인다. 그럼에도 당시 중국은 그러한 사실을 인식하지 못하고 있었던 것으로 추정된다.

This paper examines PRC’s perception of the border on the Baekdu Mountain region at the time through an analysis of the 「Map of the Changbai(Baekdu) Mountain Cheonji Area」 in 『The Border Atlas of PRC』(1959); and attempts to confirm the origin of the border markings on the North Korean map cited in the map. The following points are presented as the conclusions. First; China’s border marking method depicted on this map was never presented or insisted upon in border negotiations between Joseon Korea and Qing China. Second; North Korea’s border marking method drawn on this map was also never presented or insisted on in the negotiations between Joseon Korea and Qing China. Third; China’s understanding of the Gando Agreement shown in this map is an error. Fourth; North Korea’s border marking method shown on this map is presumed to be related to the drawing area of the Baekdu Mountain region on the Japanese topographic map(1/50;000); the Agreement Concerning Gando; and Kim Il-sung’s secret camp for the anti-Japanese movement. Fourth; in some sections of the upper Duman(Tumen) River; the two countries appear to have established substantive jurisdictional areas based on the Agreement Concerning Gando as understood according to the Japanese topographic map(1/50;000). Nevertheless; it is presumed that China at the time was not aware of it.
