북한의 3대 권력 세습을 비롯한 체제의 내구성에 대한 정책적, 학문적 탐구가 지속하여 온 이유는 쉽게 설명할 수 없는 북한체제의 독특성과 지속성 현상에서 비롯된다. 본 연구는 북한 특유의 상징화(=우상화) 작업이야말로 북한체제의 내구성을 설명할 수 있다는 전제하에 연구를 진행하였다. 상징정치는 주로 북한과 같은 전체주의 국가에서 합리적, 정상적 운용으로는 획득하기 어려운 지지를 확보하는 수단으로 활용되어왔다. 본 연구는 북한의 상징화 작업이 태양, 수령, 백두산 등 3대 매개에 집중된 배경을 우리 민족의 전통사상 천지인(天地人) 삼재론(三材論)으로 해석하려 시도하였다. 또한 김정은 체제 들어 태양, 수령 보다는 백두산을 상징화하는데 열중하고 있음을 밝혔다. 김정은 체제는 김일성의 항일혁명 무대이자 김정일의 출생지라는 백두산 일대의 혁명유적지를 현대적으로 재조성하였다. 특히 백두산과 백두혈통의 상징으로 삼지연을 내세워 신도시 건설 등 가시적이고 전방위적인 상징화 작업을 추진하였다. 이는 김정은의 안정적 통치기반을 구축하기 위한 정치, 사회적 이미지 상징전략이라고 규정하였다. 본 연구는 선행연구를 참조하여 삼지연 8개 상징유형을 분석하였고, 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화, 예술 등 삼지연 5대 변수를 재구성하여 그 시사점을 고찰하였다. 이 같은 분석과 고찰을 바탕으로 왜 북한 김정은 체제가 국내외 상황 변화와 관계없이 견고하게 자족적 시스템을 운용하여 가고 있는지를 보다 구체적으로 규명하고자 하였다. 더 나아가 여러 관련 자료를 근거로 김정은 체제의 내구성을 평가하고, 향후 진로를 전망하였다.
"The reason why policy and scholarly exploration of the durability of the North Korean system, including the three generations of power succession, has continued is due to the uniqueness and persistence of the North Korean system, which cannot be easily explained.
This study is based on the premise that North Korea's unique symbolization (=idolization) can explain the durability of the system. Symbolism has been used primarily in totalitarian states such as North Korea as a means of securing support that is difficult to obtain through rational and normal operations.
This study attempts to interpret North Korea's symbolization efforts focused on three mediums, namely the sun, the shrines, and Mount Baekdu, in terms of the traditional Korean theory of the Three Materials of heaven, earth and man. It also reveals that the Kim Jong Un system is more keen on symbolizing Mount Baekdu than the sun and shrines. The Kim system has modernized the revolutionary site of Mount Paektu, the stage of Kim Il Sung's anti-Japanese revolution and the birthplace of Kim Jong Il. In particular, it has promoted visible and all-round symbolization, including the construction of a new city with Samjiyeon as a symbol of Mount Baekdu and the Baekdu bloodline. This was defined as a political and social image symbolization strategy to build a stable foundation for Kim Jong Un's rule.
This study analyzed the eight symbol types of Samjiyeon with reference to previous studies and examined their implications by reconstructing the five variables of Samjiyon: politics, economy, society, culture, and art. Based on these analyses and considerations, this study attempts to identify more specifically why Kim Jong Un system has been operating a self-sufficient system regardless of changes in domestic and international conditions. Furthermore, we assessed the durability of Kim Jong un system based on various relevant data and predicted its future course."
