본 연구는 북한의 시각정치적 언어, 즉 북한의 지도자 김일성의 “얼굴”을 재현하고 있는 초상화분석을 통해 “얼굴의 권력론”에 대해 논의한다. 구체적으로는 칸토로비치(Ernst Kantorowicz)의 “왕의 두 신체” 논의를 원용하여 북한의 김일성 초상화를 분석하는 것인데, 김일성의 얼굴은 “성스러운 유형”의 정치적 얼굴을 획득하고, “죽었으나 살아있는” 불멸의 신체로 영원히 살아있는 얼굴의 권력을 보여준다. 이러한 시각정치적 전략을 통해, 북한은 “신”의 초월성을 드러내는 “신정정치”의 특징을 재현하고 있는데, 이것은 중세의 신정정치적 특성이 근대정치에서도 여전히 작동하고 있으며 시각정치적인 언어로 더욱 확대, 강화되고 있다는 것을 논증한다.

In this study, I discuss “The Power of the Face” through analysis of portraits representing the North Korea(DPRK)"s visual and political language, or the “Face” of its leader, Kim Il Sung. It specifically analyses the portrait of Kim Il Sung, using the discussion of “the King"s two bodies” by Ernst Kantorowicz, acquires the “sacred type” political face and shows the power of the face that is permanently alive as “dead but alive” immortal body. Through this visual and political strategy, North Korea is representing the characteristics of “theocracy” that reveal the transcendence of “God,” which proves that the theocratical characteristics of the Middle Ages still continue to modern politics and are further expanded and strengthened to visual and political language.
