이 글은 한반도가 대륙세력과 해양세력이 만나는 전략적 요충지라는 ‘한반도 중심 통념’을 비판적으로 검토한다. 먼저, 반도라는 지정학적 정체성이 우리의 자기 의식을 제한한다. 반도에 국한함으로써 우리 스스로 대륙세력으로 보지 않으며 한반도를 넘어선 지역에서 흥기한 우리의 역사적 세력을 배제하는 경향이 있다. 한반도 전체를 동북아시아 지중해의 한가운데 위치한 대륙의 연해(沿海)지역으로 봄으로써 반도 의식에 내포된 한계를 극복할 필요가 있다.
다음으로, 한반도가 중국과 일본이 상대 진영을 침략하기 위한 교두보가 될 위험이 있는 것은 사실이지만, 그것을 과도하게 강조하지 말아야 한다. 중국이나 일본에 대한 한반도로부터의 위협은 여러 안보 위협 중 하나에 불과하다. 한반도 중심 통념은 중국이나 일본에 대한 침략의 교두보로서 한반도의 전략적 중요성을 과장하는 위험이 있다.
끝으로, 한반도가 대륙과 해양을 잇는 가교라는 생각에 근본적인 의문을 제기한다. 한반도가 동북아시아 대륙과 해양을 잇는 가교가 될 수도 있지만 반드시 그런 것은 아니며, 한반도를 우회하는 길이 많이 있다. 한반도의 전략적 가치는 대륙과 해양을 잇는 가교라는 반도성보다는, 동북아시아 지중해를 관통하는 연해지대라는 연해성에서 더 많이 찾아야 할 것이다.

I raise a couple of critical questions to the conventional wisdom, widely accepted in Korea, that the Korean Peninsula is in a geopolitically strategic location between land powers and sea powers in Northeast Asia.
First, I argue that the geopolitical identity as a peninsula country places a considerable restriction on our self consciousness. Self-confined within the peninsula, we are not much willing to see ourselves as a land power, paying inadequate consideration to our ancestors who played significant political forces in the continental area beyond the Peninsula. I suggest that we see the whole land of the Peninsula as a coastal or maritime land located in the very middle of the Northeast Mediterranean Sea.
Next, I argue that we should not overemphasize the possibility that the Korean Peninsula might turn into a stepping stone for either Japan or China to expand oneself into the other’s territory. The threats to each other from China and Japan through the Korean Peninsula is just one among the many threats to their respective security. The conventional wisdom tends to overstate the strategic importance of the Korean Peninsula as a bridgehead for aggressive advancement into the other’s terrain.
Lastly, I raise a fundamental question to the idea that the Korean Peninsula serves as a key bridge or gateway between land powers and sea powers in Northeast Asia. While it may or may not become a link between land and sea powers, there are many other ways linking land and sea powers bypassing the Peninsula. I suggest to identity the strategic value of the Korean Peninsula in its maritime nature rather than in its being Peninsula.
