This paper suggests a unique perspective on the stance of ROK-US-Japan in the KAL 858 incident. By examining the respective positions of the ROK-US-Japan during the KAL 858 incident, this paper aims to determine whether there was any convergence in their stances. The results revealed commonalities in the reactions of ROK-US-Japan to the KAL 858 incident. When the KAL 858 incident occurred, the ROK, the US, and Japan in November 1987 cooperated to condemn the DPRK and impose sanctions. However, after the inauguration of the Roh Tae-woo administration, the ROK, the US, and Japan were less willing to consider military retaliation or stronger sanctions, even as they condemned the DPRK. This study suggests that ROK-US-Japan cooperated during the 1987 Korea contingency.
