This paper aims to introduce and analyze the 4th grade primary school English teacher’s guidebook of North Korea, which has been published in 2016 on the basis of North Korea’s 2013 Revised Curriculum. The teacher’s guidebook has been analyzed in terms of physical characteristics, curriculum and textbook-related aspects, and content. Some major findings are as follows: First, the guidebook mainly consists of text-based materials with rare use of photos, pictures, etc. Second, North Korea’s communist ideology is often found in a couple of lessons in connection with lesson objectives or materials. However, the guidebook generally follows the principles and techniques that typical EFL guidebooks employ. Third, lessons focusing on oral language are presented in the first half of the guidebook, which means teaching written language is delayed for a while. Lastly, the presentation-practice-production model is used throughout the lessons along with quite a number of pair and group work, which promotes students’ oral language ability. It has been suggested that analyzing the 5th grade primary school English teacher’s guidebook is needed to have a comprehensive understanding of North Korea’s primary school English education.
