북한에서는 가요나 민요를 북한 주민의 정서와 미감에 맞게 서양음악 양식과 악기로 편곡하여 혁명적 사상 내용을 전달하는 음악을 ‘우리식 고전음악’이라고 부른다. ‘우리식 고전음악’은 김일성이 정립한 주체문예이론과 김정일이 체계화한 음악예술론에 철저하게 입각하여 창작되므로 사상성과 예술성, 인민성과 민족성을 고유의 특성으로 하고 있으며, ‘우리식 고전음악’의 모든 이론은 이 특성을 기준으로 만들어진다는 특징이 있다. 이와 같이 남한의 음악과 전혀 다른 목적과 방식으로 창작되는 북한 음악의 실상에 대한 이해를 돕고자 필자는 북한의 대표적인 피아노 협주곡 조선은 하나다>와 백두산의 눈보라>의 작품분석을 통해 ‘우리식 고전음악’을 연구하였다. 본 논문에서는 먼저 작품분석의 토대가 되는 ‘우리식 고전음악’의 의미, 역사, 특성과 더불어 러시아 및 소련 음악의 영향에 대해 살펴본 후, 피아노 협주곡 조선은 하나다>와 백두산의 눈보라>의 분석을 통해 ‘우리식 고전음악’의 특성인 사상성과 예술성, 인민성과 민족성이 작품에 실질적으로 어떻게 구현되었는지 알아보았다. 이 분석 내용에서 북한 피아노 협주곡의 특징이 도출되었고, 그 결과 ‘우리식 고전음악’이 갖는 근본적인 제한성과 한계를 통찰함으로써 북한 음악의 실상을 파악할 수 있었다.
두 작품의 분석을 통해 다음과 같은 특징이 도출되었다. 첫째, 널리 알려진 가요를 편곡한 표제음악이다. 둘째, 단일악장 구성이며 ‘한 주제에 기초한 3부분 형식’을 기본 형식으로 한다. 셋째, 주제가 되는 가요 선율을 변형 없이 원선율 그대로 살려서 곡을 전개시키는 ‘반복전개수법’을 사용한다. 넷째, 사상적 내용을 묘사하기 위한 ‘형상수법’을 중요시한다. 다섯째, 주제선율을 기반으로 한 삽입선율이나 중간부 선율을 만들기 위해 ‘주제선율에 기초한 가공발전수법’을 사용한다. 여섯째, 러시아 국민주의 음악의 영향으로 낭만주의 음악어법과 소련 음악의 영향으로 사회주의적 사실주의 음악어법을 사용한다. 이와 같이 사상성과 인민성을 구현하기 위해 당이 규정한 북한의 획일적인 창작방침은 작곡가의 창작의 자유와 음악의 다양성을 제한하였고, 이는 곧 ‘우리식 고전음악’의 획일화 및 예술적 수준 저하의 원인이자 한계점이 되었다.
앞으로 이 논문이 북한의 음악과 사회문화 이해에 좋은 매개체가 되고, 북한의 기악음악 연구에 유용한 기반이 되어 다양한 후속 연구들의 활성화에 이바지할 수 있기를 기대해 본다.

In North Korea, music is a way to convert the people to Ju-che(self-reliance) ideology. The country formed a concept called 'Ju-che music,' and in late 1980s after the dismantling of the Soviet Union and the collapse of many socialist Eastern European countries, it bequeathed self-reliance music the name 'woo-ri-shik (our own unique) music' under the motto of 'woo-ri-shik socialism,' in an attempt to distinguish its own system. Among works characterized by this style, those meant to deliver revolutionist ideology through the use of Western musical elements and instruments with intent to suit the tastes of the people are called 'woo-ri-shik classical music.' This type of music is created based strictly on Kim Il Sung's very own self-reliance literature theory and Kim Jung Il's systemized music and arts theory, and it represents ideology, artistry, socialist realism and nationalism. All theories of 'woo-ri-shik classical music' is founded on adherence to these particular characteristics.
To help facilitate the understanding of North Korean music, which is in stark contrast with how South Korean music is made, a study will be conducted on 'woo-ri-shik classical music' through analysis of distinguished North Korean piano concertos Chosun is One> and The Snowstorm of Baek-du-san>. In this dissertation, it will be discussed about not only the meaning, development history, and characteristics of woo-ri-shik classical music and how it was influenced by Russian / Soviet music, but also how exactly the ideology, artistry, socialist realism and nationalism rampant in 'woo-ri-shik classical music’ manifest themselves in the music style through the analysis of Chosun is One> and The Snowstorm of Baek-du-san>.
There is much about the uniqueness of North Korean piano concertos in this analysis, and as a result, the reader will be able to see the fundamental limitations found in 'woo-ri-shik classical music' and the reality of North Korean music as a whole.
The following are the conclusions drawn from the analysis of the two works. First, it (the music) makes use of songs that are already well-known. Second, it consists of a single part, the basic format being a 3 part-format centering on one subject. Third, it uses a 'repetitive development technique' where the melody of the source song is left intact and is presented in its original form. Fourth, it focuses extensively on ideological contents. And lastly, North Korean music utilizes musical grammar steeped in socialist realism that is an influence of Russian nationalistic music as well as Romanticism and Soviet realism music. The need for music to embody ideology and the notion of bringing the people under one rule, put forth by the North Korean government, greatly limited the composers' freedom in creating music and took away any room for diversity. This led to the subpar quality and extreme standardization that 'woo-ri-shik classical music' is well known for.
This dissertation will serve to deepen the understanding of North Korean music and social climate, and lay a useful foundation for studying North Korean instrumental music, resulting in diverse future studies and research on the matter.
