50 년이 넘는 세월 동안 미국과 세계는 북한을 신비하고 불가사의하고 이상한 수수께끼로 보았다. 다른 문화, 언어 및 경험은 북한과 세계 사이의 계속되는 오해의 틈에 기여합니다. 이 논문은 영어권 세계에 대한 북한의 메시지를 분석하고 설명하고 자한다. 이전의 연구와 달리,이 논문은 풍부한 경험적 세부 사항을 제공한다. 이를 위해 이번 조사에서는 1997 년부터 2013 년까지 조선 중앙 통신사 기사를 토픽 모델링 분석으로 활용하고 있다. 조선 중앙 통신사는 북한 정부가 국제적인 청중들과 소통하기 위해 사용하는 공식적인 영어 뉴스 채널이다. 중요한 것은 이 논문이 1997 년부터 2013 년까지 구조화되지 않은 조선 중앙 통신사의 텍스트 데이터에 대한 더 정확한 경험적 개념화를 먼저 제공하고 두번째로 다른 이론적 관점을 제공함으로써 문헌의 부족한 격차를 해소한다는 것이다. 비판적으로 본 연구는 국가 주권과 원자력 지위에 관한 정권의 정책 목표를 반영한 주체 - 선군정치 서술의 지배력이 경제 발전, 통일, 외교, 반 제국주의에 초점을 맞춘 다른 주요 서술과 구별되는 이유를 설명한다. 서구 분석가들은 정권 안정을 위한 경제적 정당성을 우선시하는 문화적 편향 가능성 때문에 북한의 행동을 잘못 인식하는 경향이 있지만 북한에서는 사상 정치적 정당성이 다른 모든 정당성보다 우선한다. 다른 이슈들 중에서 이 논문의 결과가 의미하는 바는 정책 입안자들이 북한 정책 목표와 관련한 경험적 관점에서 KCNA 영어의 서술 변화를 이해할 수 있게 해줄 것이라는 것이다. 이 논문은 6 개의 절으로 구성된다. 첫 번째 절에서는 북한 연구 분야의 소개, 연구 방법론 및 자동화 된 텍스트 분석의 최근 응용에 대해 설명합니다. 두 번째 절에서는 선전과 북한 언론의 현존 역사를 살펴 본다. 세 번째 절에서는 북한 이데올로기의 진화에 대해 간략하게 논의한다. 네 번째와 다섯 번째 절은 잠재적인 서술이 북한의 정책 목표와의 관계를 이해할 수 있도록 1997 년부터 2013 년까지 KCNA 데이터베이스를 분석하기위한 토픽 모델링의 적용을 보여준다. 이러한 경험적 접근법의 사용은 본 논문에서 논의된 핵심 주제를 평가하기 위한 이전의 시도들을 상당히 발전시킨다. 그 다음에 간단한 결론이 나온다.
For more than 50 years the United States and the world has viewed North Korea as mysterious, impenetrable, and strange. A different culture, language, and experience contributes to the continued misunderstanding between North Korea and the world. This dissertation analyzes and explains North Korea’s message to the English-speaking world. Unlike previous research, this dissertation provides a richness of empirical detail. To do so, this research employs a topic model analysis of Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) articles from 1997 to 2013. KCNA is the official English news outlet utilized by the North Korean government for communicating to an international audience. Importantly, this dissertation fills an underexplored gap in the literature by first offering a more precise empirical conceptualization of the unstructured KCNA text data from 1997 to 2013 and, second, a different theoretical perspective. Critically, this study explains why the dominance of a Juche-Military First narrative, reflects the regime’s policy goals of national sovereignty and nuclear power status, is distinct from the other major narratives focused on economic development, Korean reunification, diplomacy, and anti-imperialism. The distinction is western analysts often misperceive the actions of North Korea because of a possible cultural bias that assumes primacy of economic legitimization for regime stability, while in North Korea, ideological and political legitimation trumps all other forms of legitimacy. Among other issues, the implications of this dissertation’s findings will allow policy makers eager to understand the narrative shifts in KCNA English from an empirical perspective in relation to North Korean policy goals. This dissertation consists of six sections. The first section provides the introduction, discusses research methodology, and recent applications of automated text analysis in the field of North Korean studies. The second section reviews the extant history of propaganda and North Korean media. The third section briefly discusses the evolution of North Korean ideology. The fourth and fifth sections illustrates the application of topic modeling to analyze the KCNA database from 1997 to 2013 for latent narratives to understand their relationship to North Korean policy goals. The use of this empirical approach significantly advances previous attempts to assess the core themes discussed in this dissertation. A brief conclusion follows.
