북한을 분석해온 기존 방법론, 구체적으로 정치·사회·경제·인류·역사·예술· 종교 등 다양한 관점으로 북한을 들여다보았을 때, 북한은 다른 사회주의 국가들과 달리 끝내 포섭되지 않는, 불가지론(不可知論)의 한계가 드러나는 체제이다. 형식적으로는 근대국가 체제이지만, 내용적으로는 여전히 봉건왕조에 더 가까운 북한의 국가정체성은 단순히 이질적(heterogeneity)이라는 술어만으로는 포착하지 못하는 내용적 차이가 분명 존재한다.

더불어, 지금까지 북한체제내부의 권력핵심에 집중했던, 기존의 접근법은 북한체제 해석에서 일정부분 한계를 또한 드러내고 있다. 그리고 북한을 바라보는 서구학계의 방법론 역시, 우리의 ‘것’과 거의 대동소이하다. 이같은 북한체제 난독(難讀)의 딜레마(dilemma)를 극복하기 위해, 주로 권력 상층부와 외재적 억압구조에 집중했던 관점을 전환해, 권력의 지배와 피지배, 즉 권력의 양가성에 새롭게 주목하며 체제내부의 피지배층, ‘인민’의 의식과 행위로 관심을 전환했다. 보다 구체적으로, 북한의 인민이 권력에 반응하는 ‘형식’과 ‘내용’, 즉 지배와 피지배의 작용 및 반작용의 관계양상에 천착(穿鑿)하고자 했다.

이른바 종교담론의 전용(appropriation)을 통해 관찰한 북한은 지배계급의 용의주도한 ‘권력 지키기’와 피지배계급, 인민의 ‘내재적 복종’이 서로 조응(照應)관계를 이루며 지속되고 있는 체제로써, 북한은 종교국가 체제와 긴밀한 유사성을 담지하고 있다.

우리에게 익숙하면서도 낯선, 유교의 전용(appropriation), 근대성의 결여(缺如), 언어의 독점 그리고 태어나 죽을 때 까지 지속되는 치밀한 사상교육 등은 북한체제를 ‘보이는 힘(the seen power)’과 ‘보이지 않는 힘(the unseen power)’으로 통제하는 외·내재적 억압 장치들이다.

흔히 ‘종교의 잠재력’은 세속권력이 가진 힘을 초월해, 집요한 관성으로 재현되곤 한다. 북한내부에 올곧이 존재하는, 김일성을 향한 인민의 무비판적, 무조건적 신앙, 다시 말해 ‘내재적 복종(immanent obedience)’은 종교적 인간의 정체성과 유사하다.

결국, 북한의 특수성으로부터 파생된 우리의 문제의식은 인류가 담지하고 있는 종교의 집요한 관성, 즉 ‘복종’에 대한 질문의 범위를 '인간론'이라는 보편적 지평으로 확대하도록 이끌고 있다.

In terms of previous analysis methods, such as those of the politics, the sociology, the economics, the study of history, and the anthropology, it is not easy to define the political system of the North Korea, concluding that it is just different from that of other countries. It was not sufficient to explain the essence of the political mechanism of the North Korea as difference. The difficulty of analyzing the political system of the North Korea lies in the hybridity, which means that the North Korea is seemingly a modern state but is substantially more closer to a feudal system. Accordingly, it seems that there is no other words than the ‘heterogeneity’ that properly grasps the essence of the political system of the North Korea. Similarly, the methodology used by the western academy as a tool describing the North Korea. has been no better than that of ours.

Now it is time that the North Korea should be looked at in a different point of view in order to read this mysterious country more precisely. In other words, there needs to be a change in methodology in interpreting the North Korea. It is a starting point where this thesis begins.

While previous studies of the North Korea were focused on the external structure of oppression such as analyzing the upper class, this thesis focuses on the way the people of the North Korea react to the ruling class. In other words, it is high time to move our eyes to the correlation between the upper class and the lower class, and the aspect of their action and reaction.

By the appropriation of the religious discourse, the system of the North Korea has sustained the structure which is carefully designed to maintain the power of the upper class and the voluntary obedience of the underclass which inherently resides in their mind and body.

The appropriation of the Confucianism which is familiar to the Korean people and the absence of the modernity and the complete monopoly of language were the devices which have controled the system of the North Korea, acting as the visible and the invisible force.

Also, the potential power of Kim Il Sung religion has exerted insistent gravity toward the North Koreans, beyond the secular power. The belief of the North Koreans as a religious system whose main feature is immanent obedience is the hidden keyword to unlocking the secret of power maintenance of the North Korea.

Therefore, in oder to understand the political system of the North Korea, there must be a preceding analysis about the religious belief of the North Koreans which have supported the North Korea for a long time. It is only after dismantling this pseudo-religious belief which has been brought up by the political system of North Korea that we can really understand how the North Korea has been able to maintain its regime and control the mind of its people.
