김정은 시대 조선노동당에는 많은 변화가 발생했다. 최근의 변화로는 당 공식회의의 정례화 및 투명화, 당 내에서 군의 세력 및 권력 약화, 보상과 책벌을 통한 빈번한 간부교체, 회의의 신속한 개최 및 현지 개최, 공식회의의 특성과 위계 확립이 있다. 조선노동당은 1980년 6차 당 대회 이후 36년만인 2016년 7차 당 대회를 개최하여 당 규약과 조직을 변경하였다. 내년 1월에는 8차 당 대회가 개최될 예정이다. 7차 당대회가 선대의 유산을 일부 계승하면서 김정은 정권의 실질적인 통치시대를 선언했다면, 8차 당 대회는 김일성, 김정일의 유산으로부터 벗어나 새로운 김정은 시대 10년을 선포하고 여기에 맞는 기구와 제도를 마련하며 당 규약을 개정할 것으로 예상된다. 새로 개정될 당 규약은 현재의 당 규약이 가진 모순을 해결하면서 시대적 변화상에 따른 내용을 적극 반영할 것으로 보인다. 또한 김정은의 지도력 및 당의통치를 강화시키는 방향으로 변화될 것으로 예상된다.

During the Kim Jong Un era, many changes occurred in the Korean Workers' Party. Among them, recent changes are as follows: The regularization and transparency of the Party's official meetings, the weakening of the military's power, frequent personnel changes through compensation and punishment, prompt meetings and on-site meetings, and stipulations of the characteristics and hierarchy of official meetings. The Party held the 7th Party Congress in 2016, 36 years after the 6th Party Congress in 1980, and changed its rules and organization. 
The eighth party congress will be held in January next year. While the 7th Party Congress declared a de facto ruling era of the Kim Jong-un regime inheriting some of the legacy of his predecessors, the 8th Party Congress is expected to break away from the legacy of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il, declare the Kim Jong-un era and revise various organizations, systems and party regulations. The newly revised party bylaw is expected to actively reflect the changes of the time. It is also expected to strengthen Kim Jong Un's leadership and party rule.
