본 연구는 북한의 대내외 정책에 영향력을 행사하는 변수들, 특히 중국변수를 북한이 어떻게 체제 안정과 국제 정치적 위상과 협상력 제고에 전략적으로 활용하고 관리하는지를 고찰한다. 미중 갈등이 지속적으로 격화하고 북한 핵문제에 대한 해결방안이 답보상태에 있는 현 상황에서 동북아시아의 지정학적인 환경을 우호적으로 조성하고 우리 정부의 대북 정책의 효율성을 높이기 위해 북중 관계를 더 면밀하고 새롭게 인식할 필요성이 있다. 그러기 위해 본 연구는 북한을 중국의 종속변수로 보아왔던 기존 시각을 비판적으로 검토하고 북중 관계를 새롭게 인식하고 재고할 필요성을 제기한다. 이러한 시각에 바탕을 두고 북한이 중국의 정치적 역할과 한계를 어떻게 인식, 관리하고 전략적으로 이용하며, 이를 통해 대내외 정치적 안정화(북한의 시각에서)를 도모해 나가는지를 검토하고자 한다. 궁극적으로 북중 관계에 대한 새로운 인식을 통해 심화하는 미중 전략경쟁 속에서 중국의 대북 영향력의 정도와 깊이를 평가하고 향후 우리 정부 대북 정책의 재구성에 있어 핵심 고려 사항을 검토하고자 한다.
 
This study examines how North Korea strategically utilizes and manages the variables that influence North Korea's domestic and foreign policies, especially the China variable, to stabilize the regime and reconsider its international political status and bargaining power. In the current situation where the US-China conflict continues to intensify and the solution to the North Korean nuclear issue is at a standstill, it is necessary to reconsider North Korea China relations in order to create a peaceful geopolitical environment in Northeast Asia and  strategically accelerate the South Korean government's North Korea policy. To this end, this  study critically reviews the existing view of North Korea as a dependent variable of China,  and suggests the need to reexamine the relationship between North Korea and China.
 Based on this perspective, we investigate how North Korea recognizes, manages, and uses China's political roles and limitations strategically, and through this, promotes internal and external political stabilization (from the perspective of North Korea). Ultimately, we evaluate the extent and depth of China's influence on North Korea amid the intensifying US-China strategic competition through a renewed understanding of North Korea-China relations, and review key elements in reconstituting our government's North Korea policy in the future.
