The five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (United States, Russia, China, United Kingdom, and France) and Germany (P5+1) agreed on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on July 14, 2015, in Vienna, Austria. They guaranteed that through the new approach to the Iranian nuclear problem, Iran’s nuclear programme would be used solely for peaceful purposes. They also made a deal that through complete execution of the JCPOA, they would contribute to peace and security not only in the Middle East, but also the entire world.
According to the JCPOA, Iran reaffirmed that it would not pursue, develop, or acquire nuclear weapons under any circumstances. Moreover, the P5+1 countries confirmed that they would limit the scope of Iran’s nuclear programme, including its enrichment and research and development (R&D) activities, and alleviate the concerns of the international community by implementing comprehensive inspection measures that can guarantee transparency.
