본 연구는 동북아시아 역내 국가들의 경제 발전이 분쟁에 미치는 영향을 경험적으로 확인하고 사례 분석을 통해 이들 국가가 분쟁을 어떻게 관리하여 전쟁으로 확대되지 않았는가를 분석하는 연구이다 동북아시아 국가들은 갈등의 잠재적 요소를 가지고 있으면서도 높은 경제 성장과 경제 협력을 확대하는 지역이다. 혹자는 이를 ‘아시아 패러독스’라 한다(Manning 1993). 그렇다면 역내 국가들의 경제 발전과 무역의 상호의존이 증가되고 있음에도 불구하고 지속적으로 관측되는 분쟁의 양상은 어떻게 해석할 수 있는가? 역내 국가들이 분쟁 발생 요인을 내포하고 있음에도 왜 전쟁으로 확대되지 않았는가? 전쟁이 없는 지역 질서를 가지게 하는 근본적인 원인은 무엇인가? 본 연구는 이 질문에
