이 글의 목적은 탈식민주의(post-colonialism)적 시각에서 한반도와 아일랜드섬의 탈식민적 분단의 기원 및 탈분단(post-division)의 과정을 아일랜드섬을 중심으로 비교 분석하는 것이다. 글의 구성은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 탈식민주의, 탈식민적 사회적 장벽(social partition) 및 갈등전환(conflict transformation)에 관한 이론적 논의를 재구성한다. 둘째, 식민지시대 아일랜드섬과 한반도의 자치운동과 분단의 기원을 탈식민주의적 시각에서 해석한다. 셋째, 아일랜드섬과 한반도의 탈분단 과정, 즉 탈식민적 평화과정을 비교한다. 마지막으로, 아일랜드섬의 탈식민적 평화체제가 한반도에 주는 함의를 정리한다.
