이 책의 장점은 지난 트럼프 행정부 시절 북미 대화의 숨은 퍼즐을 맞춰 놓았다는 것이다. 이면에 가려진 진실을 마주함으로써 모든 사건의 맥락을 꿰뚫을 수 있다는 점에서 이 책은 매우 중요한 기록서다. 그리고 바이든 행정부의 북핵 억지 정책 혹은 대북 무시 정책을 역대 미국 행정부의 대북 접근법에 근거해 분석했다는 점에서 작은 개념서이자 역사서이기도 하다. 어려운 이론이나 분석을 요하진 않지만, 학부생들이 알아야 할 북한의 핵전략, 수정주의 국가 북한의 전략 전환, 나아가 평화를 위한 북핵 문제 해법의 최종 상태(end state) 논의 등 최소한의 비확산 전략들을 미국 행정부의 대북 정책과 연계해 다루고 있기 때문이다.

이 저서는 인류가 끊임없이 전쟁을 하면서도 대화를 해온 역사를 쉬운 문체로 서술한다. 충돌 직전 전쟁을 막은 외교, 교전 중 대화를 통해 전쟁을 중단시킨 외교의 사례를 확인해 생동감 있게 서술했다. 전쟁을 오히려 키운 외교도 있고, 전쟁을 불러온 외교도 많은데, 그런 사례도 세밀하게 묘사하고 있다.
누구나 쉽게 접할 수 있는 문체로 전쟁과 외교의 관계를 설명해, 토마스 홉스가 말하는 ‘전쟁의 상태’(state of war. 갈등 지속의 상태)에 있는 한반도에 사는 한국인들이 외교와 대화의 힘과 능력, 그리고 그 필요성에 대해 한번쯤 생각해 볼 수 있는 기회를 갖도록 하고자 한다.

코리아반도의 미래를 상상하며, 한국과 조선이라는 민족국가를 탐구하다
본 도서의 저술 목적은 분단 이후 남북한, 즉 한국과 조선이 민족국가(nation-state) 형성 과정에서 민족과 국가의 정통성 확립을 위해 경쟁 혹은 투쟁해 온 과정을 분석하는 것이다. 분단 후 약 80년간 경쟁적으로 민족국가 건설을 추진한 결과, 남북의 정체성은 언어와 역사, 가치와 문화, 민족과 국민의식 등 모든 면에서 달라졌다. 향후 통일 과정과 이후의 국가 건설을 생각한다면, 코리아반도의 남과 북에 형성된 한국과 조선의 민족국가 정체성을 연구하는 것은 사회통합과 국민통합의 증진을 위해 준비해야 할 매우 중요하고도 긴요한 과제다.
