2018년 4월 27일 남북 정상은 분단의 상징인 판문점에서 손을 잡았다. 이후 싱가포르에서 북미정상회담이 개최되면서, 한반도 분단의 역사는 새로운 변화를 꿈꾸게 되었다. 2017년 국민들의 힘으로 민주주의의 촛불을 높게 들었던 대한민국은 남북의 갈등 해결과 더불어 통일교육의 시대적 전환이라는 과제와 마주하게 되었다. 그러나 정부의 대북-통일정책 변화와는 달리 과거 안보적 성격이 강했던 정부 주도의 통일교육은 아직까지 지체 현상에서 벗어나지 못하고 있다. 본 연구는 평화학 기반 통일교육의 실천에 그 목적을 두고 있다. 정부 주도의 통일교육은 시민사회 및 민간단체의 바로미터가 되기에 책무성이 매우 크지만, 안보 중심의 가치관, 당위적 통일론, 사실 관계의 비확실성, 일회성 등의 한계를 지니고 있다
